Motion: Appointment of a person responsible for ongoing and regular communication with Israel Post regarding the community’s mail distribution centers

Submitted by: Council Member Dr. Limor Zar Gutman, Esq., “Lema’an HaMoshava” party

For quite some time now, I have been hearing numerous complaints from residents throughout the town regarding the mail distribution facilities in the town. The problem concerns the incorrect mailboxes. These boxes are very small and/or are not emptied frequently enough. Consequently, residents who receive misdelivered mail and wish to place it in the box so that it can be forwarded to the correct recipient are unable to do so. They place the mail on top of the misdelivery box. The mail scatters everywhere. I walked around the mail distribution centers in the town, and almost everywhere you can see letters scattered on the floor, most of them wet from the rain.

This constant problem throughout the town causes threefold damage:

  1. The misdelivered mail doesn’t reach the person it’s intended for;
  2. The letters are scattered everywhere, and it’s possible to see who received what, thereby compromising residents’ privacy;
  3. The scattering of letters leads to a serious litter problem. This is environmental pollution and requires maintenance workers to clean up trash that shouldn’t be trash in the first place.

See the attachment for two photos sent to me by residents illustrating the problem.

It is clear to me that the responsibility lies with Israel Post, but residents’ repeated appeals to them have been in vain. There is no response and Israel Post is ignoring the issue. Therefore, the Council must step in and ensure ongoing and regular follow-up with the postal service. Hence the motion I am asking all Council members to adopt at tonight’s meeting.

Motion:

The Council shall appoint the Council Secretary and/or the Director of the Operations Department, or any other professional designated by the Council Chair to handle this matter, to be responsible for liaising with Israel Post regarding all mailboxes located within the community.

The council representative will address, first and foremost, the issue of misplaced mailboxes throughout the community. He will continue to fulfill this role on an ongoing and regular basis. The representative will provide the council with a status update in about a month regarding the progress of the matter and the solutions implemented.
